Cantate Musica 20-21

In the ever-changing landscape, Oberlin Choristers rehearsals and events will adjust to offer new and surprising ways to create music as a community. Each conductor has plans to educate and inspire their singers. A special note from Mrs. Orr is included below outlining their season plan.

We have endeavored to include as much information as possible and will continue to communicate regularly with families as you register. Oberlin Chorister staff is continually monitoring the CDC guidelines and will make changes to the 2020-21 season as needed to comply with safety guidelines.

All singers participating in in-person Oberlin Choristers activities need to wear a mask at all times.

We hope you will join us for our 2020-2021 season!

A video message from Mrs. Cox

Cantate Musica is composed of approximately 50 young singers, grades 5-6, from all over northeast Ohio. These singers build performance and music reading skills as well as build healthy vocal production during their voice change years.

Once rehearsals begin, singers will be given a low-risk, comfortable voice evaluation for part placement in this choir (soprano, alto, etc.).

Cantate Musica 2020-21 season tuition:

$328 (reduced for the 20-21 season)

2020-21 Uniform:

Each singer will receive a 2020-21 season t-shirt. No formal uniforms will be ordered this season.

Oberlin Chorister staff is working on locations based on our distancing needs.

Rehearsal times are for reference only.

  • Times will be adjusted to accomodate group sizing and scheduling ability.
  • Hybrid option singers will be divided into groups of 10 that will rehearse in person (masked & socially distanced) for 30 minutes each. These rehearsals will be available live via Zoom.
  • Virtual option singers will attend each weekly small group rehearsal via Zoom
  • In the event we have multiple groups for a choir, we hope to be able to make all group sessions available live via Zoom.
  • A virtual singer could attend multiple sessions in one evening. A hybrid singer could attend their in person group and additional groups via Zoom that same evening.

A note from Mrs. Cox:

This 2020-2021 season Cantate will be indulging in music FUNdamentals! These are extremely important building blocks for the development of the complete musician, especially singers!

  • -Rhythm through using various instruments i.e. hand drums, Boomwhackers, shakers, full-size World Music drums in a Drum Circle environment, utilizing 'call and response’, improvisation and much more.
  • -Sight Reading using real professional hand chimes and other pitched bar instruments.
  • -Music Theory -we will cover all the basics and increase our knowledge through the year.
  • -Music History -music education is not complete without studying its incredible history. We will get to know a few of the greats -Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms! And much more....
  • -Ear Training- an important aspect of any musician's development-matching pitch, rhythms etc.
  • -Sight singing using materials provided by Mrs. Cox.
  • -Listening to other children's choirs around the world (using YouTube and select DVD's), broadening our horizons, learning of different cultures and their tone production as well as pronunciation due to foreign languages.
  • -"Traveling" abroad (virtually) to connect with a children's choir in South Africa!
  • -We will pursue a song writing class with Jim Papoulis, composer of 'Give Us Hope', sung by Cantate last year-possibly performing our song!
  • We will continue our collaboration with Oberlin College Conservatory's TIMARA department for various music related projects.
  • Lastly, we will study 2-3 pieces of choral music (with choreography!) to perform for the Holidays as well as Spring 2021.
