Oberlin Choristers Choral Masterclass

This choral masterclass with Dr. Steven Hankle will give you and your students an opportunity to work with another conductor, receive helpful feedback, and encourage new ideas for your rehearsals.

Each choir will have 90 minutes to warm up, perform, and engage with Dr. Hankle.

Choirs are invited to remain on site and watch other groups perform.

Teachers register their choir or small group by December 1.

Deadline to confirm your school’s participation. Teachers complete our Participation Form to register their school.

 

Prepare up to 3 songs. The remainder of your time will be used to work with Dr. Hankle.

Dr. Steven Hankle

Assistant Professor of Choral Music & Music Education at the University of Dayton

Dr. Steven Hankle, Assistant Professor of Choral Music and Music Education, and Director of the University of Dayton Chorale and Bella Voce. Under Dr. Hankle’s direction, his choirs have toured and performed regionally and nationally (Puerto Rico, 2020), and performed community joint concerts with the Bach Society of Dayton, and Stivers School for the Arts. He also teaches undergraduate choral conducting, and choral methods. Dr. Hankle is also Choral Faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where he is the Music Director of the Alumni Choir and Director of the Vocal Ensemble and Staff Choir. Under his direction, the combined choirs performed a radio broadcast performance of John Rutter, Gloria (2017), Johannes Brahms, Liebeslieder Walzer Op, 52 (2019) and André Thomas A Celebration of Love and Joy (2020), during the Summer Music Festival in Twin Lake, Michigan. As a guest conductor, Dr. Hankle has directed honors choirs in California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and co-directed the Avoice4peace Choir in Kenya, Africa. An active clinician and adjudicator, he has worked with choirs in California, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Tijuana, Mexico.

Dr. Hankle is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Chorus America, and the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME). He has served as the Florida State University ACDA Chapter President and presented his research at the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA), Arizona Music Education Association (AMEA), NAfME, and ACDA regional conferences. His primary area of interest is the development of choral music education in urban secondary public schools and student engagement through the development of music skills and repertoire in the choral rehearsal.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Hankle received both undergraduate and master degrees in music education and choral conducting from San Francisco State University and his Ph.D. in choral conducting and music education from Florida State University. Prior to his appointment at the University of Dayton, he served as choral music and music education faculty at Penn State University, and successfully developed a new choral program at Mission High School in San Francisco.
