Registration Information

Katherine Plank, the Choristers' Artistic Director, founded the Choristers Ensemble of Oberlin (the current Oberlin Choristers) in 1990. The single choir began with 40 children who committed one afternoon per week to rehearsals. The Choristers soon became known as a welcoming place for children who were committed to hard work, good music, and fun. The rest, as they say, is history.

Approximately 500 children are enrolled in one of Choristers' programs.

    Kindermusik™

Kindermusik™ is an early childhood music and movement program based on the belief that each child is musical. Parents or caregivers participate with the child in weekly 45 minute sessions.

Primary Choir

Primary Choir is a vocal readiness program for children in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. During weekly rehearsals, singing and movement activities are designed to develop the singing voice as well as music literacy. No audition is necessary for this group that performs in two concerts and gives one demonstration program for parents each year. (back to the top)

Intermediate Choir

Children in the 3rd and 4th grade Intermediate Choir continue with the training begun in the Primary Choir. They participate in three major concerts per year. Jennifer Call will direct both sections of this choir. No audition is necessary for the Intermediate Choir. (back to the top)

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is composed of approximately 60 young singers from grades 5 through 9. These auditioned singers prepare three major concerts each year.Their spring concert, the culmination of a season of hard work and fun, is presented in Oberlin College's resonant Finney Chapel. Touring Choir

Touring Choir offers a challenging choral experience for 55 auditioned singers each year. These 6th-9th grade students commit to additional rehearsals, perform at a variety of outreach events, and tour throughout the United States and internationally. Individual singers are often offered opportunities to audition for national honors choirs. This choir frequently provides singers for the Cleveland Opera and the Oberlin Opera companies.

Youth Chorale

The Choristers began its first SATB choir in the 1997-98 season in order to allow older singers (particularly boys who could no longer perform in a treble choir) the opportunity to continue singing throughout their high school years. The Youth Chorale is composed of singers from grades 9-12. The 70 members of this choir perform three concerts per year throughout their high school years. They have sung with the Oberlin Community Strings, the Oberlin College Orchestra and the Louisville Youth Choir. Mark Skladan directs and Nick Crowther is accompanist. (back to the top)

2007 Lorain Country Children's Honors Choir

Each spring Oberlin Choristers hosts the Lorain County Children's Honors Choir. Invited students from throughout Lorain County come together for a full day of rehearsal. At the end of the day, the choir performs in front of family and friends at Stocker Center Theater. The 2007 Honors Choir was directed by Ann Usher.
